CARENCRO — With 10 unanswered points in the final quarter, Sam Houston spoiled undefeated Carencro’s homecoming with a 31-28 victory Friday night.
Justin Cormier’s with 14.1 seconds remaining gave the Broncos the win.
Sam Houston (2-2) controlled the game for the first 12 minutes.
Trevontai Thompson put the Broncos on the scoreboard first with a strong 52-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The Broncos star running back wasn’t done as added another touchdown in the opening quarter, this one from 10 yards out.
Thompson finished the game with 183 yards on 35 carries.
After being shut out in the first quarter, Carencro (3-1) shook off the sluggish start and seized the lead with a strong second quarter.
After a leaping interception by Treylon Barnaba that woke up the crowd inside the Cro Dome, running back Tyreik Campbell got the Bears on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run. Carencro tied the game a few minutes later with a 1-yard run by quarterback Gabe Duffy.
The extra point by Logan Boudreaux gave the Bears their first lead of the night.
Carencro continued to build on that momentum as Campbell added a 27-yard touchdown run a few minutes before halftime. Campbell eclipsed the 100-yard mark by halftime and ended the game with 188 yards on 21 carries.
Carencro padded its lead to start the third quarter. Duffy connected with Trevor George down the right sideline, who shook off a defender, regained his balance and got into the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown.
Carencro appeared to be cruising to an easy victory, but Sam Houston rallied.
A blocking a punt by Duffy, who had trouble handling the high snap, the Broncos scored on an 8-yard run by Thompson. Sam Houston quarterback DeVante’ DeBoest found Thompson in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion.
Sam Houston then recovered the onside kick and had Carencro on its heels. The Broncos though couldn’t take advantage of the great field position and was forced to punt.
The Bears put together a drive, but it stalled as Duffy’s field-goal attempt went wide right.
Aided largely by a 44-yard completion to Jess Lafleur, Sam Houston marched down the field and tied the game with a 1-yard quarterback sneak by DeBoest.
With 6:41 left in the game, the game was tied at 28.
Carencro appeared to be putting the touches on a game-winning drive. Campbell broke off a long run down to the 2, but the big play was nullified because of a holding penalty.
Moments later, Austin Hebert intercepted a pass by Duffy and the Broncos had a chance to win in regulation.
Sam Houston first picked up the first down on a fake punt and then got into the red zone as DeBoest found Lafleur for a 31-yard reception in the middle of the field. After a 2-yard run by Thompson, Cormier came on to the field for the game-winning kick with 14.1 seconds remaining.
After back-to-back timeouts by Carencro, Cormier booted through the 27-yard field goal attempt.
With four seconds left, Duffy took the snap and rolled out trying to find an open receiver down field but Cole James brought down Duffy as time expired.
Carencro returns to action next Friday hosting Breaux Bridge while Sam Houston hosts Comeaux.
