Crowley climbs to No. 6 in Class 4A football poll _lowres

There’s nothing like a rash of upsets toward the bottom of the Class 4A poll, coupled with Crowley’s 18-point victory, to spoil the Gents’ cover.

Crowley, which returned 15 starters from a state playoff team, this week took its rightful place among the best in 4A with a No. 6 ranking in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s high school football poll.

“I like under the radar,” Crowley coach Josh Fontenot quipped.

Crowley (1-0) garnered enough votes to rank just outside the top 10 in last week’s preseason poll. The Gents piled up 450 yards in a 31-13 victory at Iowa to open the season.

Crowley’s victory caused a chain reaction up the ladder with the Nos. 6-7-8-9 teams all losing their season openers.

That gave the 4A rankings a heavy Acadiana accent with No. 2 Teurlings Catholic (1-0), No. 3 St. Thomas More (1-0) and No. 8 Carencro (1-0) — all teams from District 4-4A — ranked in the top 10.

District 5-4A foes Cecilia, which hosts Crowley in two weeks, and Breaux Bridge received votes.

“I’m hoping they’re excited,” Fontenot said in anticipation of his team’s reaction to the ranking. “I think they should be there. They earned that. Now you’ve got to go and play and defend that. I want them to enjoy it, but it doesn’t win you a game or guarantee you a thing.”

Acadiana (1-0) easily defended its No. 1 ranking in Class 5A, throttling Northside 49-0. The Wreckin’ Rams received 9 of 11 first-place votes and 128 overall points ahead of No. 2 Rummel (1-0).

Patterson, the area’s lone school ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A, dropped from fifth to 10th following its 24-13 loss to Class 5A Central Lafourche. Church Point and Kaplan each received votes.

Notre Dame of Crowley (1-0) climbed two spots to No. 5 in Class 2A after a 24-6 victory over Class 4A LaGrange. The Pioneers trailed No. 4 Ouachita Christian (1-0) 87-79 in voting points, while Catholic-New Iberia (0-1), ranked eighth in the preseason, fell out of the poll following a 35-21 loss to Vermilion Catholic.

District 7-1A has quite a presence in the 1A poll this week with VC (No. 3), Ascension Episcopal (No. 7) and Central Catholic-Morgan City (No. 9) all in the top 10.

Crowley jumped to a 24-6 halftime lead over Iowa and extended that margin to 31-0 after three quarters. Running back Ty’Von Griffin led the way with 26 carries for 195 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Pate Broussard was 14-of-25 for 189 yards.

The Gents, who host Westlake on Friday, also forced four turnovers.

“We know what our ultimate goal is at the end of the season,” Fontenot said. “Our focus this week is going to be Westlake. We learned our lesson (a 17-14 loss) with them last year. They’re coming in here to beat us. We owe them a little bit from last year, and we have to do our best to play extremely sharp.”
