Thursday’s capsules

New Iberia (4-5, 3-2) at Acadiana (6-2, 5-0)

LAST YEAR: Acadiana won 42-13

THE BUZZ: A well-rested Acadiana team (the Rams had an open date last week) will look to secure an undefeated District 3-5A season as well as its second district title in the past three years this week against New Iberia. The Rams have won five straight, all in district play, and they’ve done it in both offensive shootouts and defensive battles. New Iberia has had a bit of an up-and-down campaign thanks largely to its struggles on defense. The Yellow Jackets have yielded 32 points per game in their five losses.

Crowley (9-0, 4-0) at Rayne (2-7, 1-3)

LAST YEAR: Crowley won 36-21

THE BUZZ: Not only can Crowley cap its first perfect regular season since 2006 and a district championship, it can do it against the rival Wolves. The Gents have been rolling thanks to their offensive firepower. Running back Ty’Von Griffin has 25 rushing touchdowns this season, and quarterback Pate Broussard has added 14 scores through the air. This year has been a struggle for Rayne, especially as of late. The Wolves have lost three of their past four by 18 or more points.

Opelousas (0-9, 0-4) at Teurlings Catholic (7-3, 3-1)

LAST YEAR: Did not play

THE BUZZ: You’ve got to feel for Opelousas. The Tigers entered the final two weeks of the season 0-8, and there was no relief in sight. Their final games were against powerhouses STM and Teurlings, and both schools were coming off losses. Last week, STM pummeled Opelousas 77-0. This week, a Teurlings team that is coming off a tough loss to Carencro will look to at least tie for a district title.

Carencro (6-3, 3-1) at Beau Chene (5-4, 1-3)

LAST YEAR: Did not play

THE BUZZ: It’s been a bit of an up-and-down season for Carencro, but the Bears have Tyreik Campbell, and that makes them a team nobody wants to face once the postseason comes around. Campbell rushed for 261 yards and a touchdown in last week’s 33-21 win against Teurlings Catholic, and now the Bears are poised to clinch at least a tie of the district title. They’ll first have to get past Beau Chene, which has struggled in district play after a hot start to the season.

Patterson (7-2, 5-0) at Franklin (1-8, 0-5)

LAST YEAR: Patterson won 41-6

THE BUZZ: Remember when Patterson was 0-2? Yeah, neither do they. The Lumberjacks have reeled off a seven-game winning streak since then, scoring 48.9 points per game while allowing just 19.8 points per game. One more win would vault them into the playoffs as one of the hottest 3A teams in the state, and that should certainly happen this week against a Franklin team that has been shut out in back-to-back weeks.

West St. Mary (3-6, 3-3) at Loreauville (7-2, 3-2)

LAST YEAR: Loreauville won 54-6

THE BUZZ: While Loreauville is officially out of the district title race after losing to Opelousas Catholic last week, it can still finish with an impressive 8-2 mark in the regular season (with one win coming via forfeit after Catholic-New Iberia played with an ineligible player). West St. Mary has closed the season strong, winning each of its past two games, but Loreauville’s offense (34.3 points per game) shouldn’t find much resistance this week.

Berwick (3-6, 1-4) at North Vermilion (3-6, 1-4), 7:30 p.m.

LAST YEAR: Did not play

THE BUZZ: North Vermilion has fallen off, going 1-5 in its past six games after a 2-1 start to the season. Its been a disappointing debut in District 8-3A play for the Patriots, especially after they closed last season so strong with a first-round playoff upset of Buckeye. Things have been similarly tough for Berwick this season. Each of the Panthers’ six losses have come by 19 or more points.

Catholic-NI (3-6, 3-3) at Notre Dame (9-0, 6-0)

LAST YEAR: Catholic won 56-28

THE BUZZ: This matchup lost a little bit of its luster when Catholic-New Iberia had to forfeit four wins from earlier this season when it had an ineligible player competing on special teams. But the record doesn’t change the fact that it should be a good football game. Notre Dame is looking to wrap up a perfect regular season and a district title. It has feasted on the lower levels of its district lately, but don’t forget that it has also feasted on just about everybody this season. Plus, the Pios certainly remember when Catholic’s Jason Pellerin (now at Ole Miss) ran wild over them last year.

Cecilia (8-1, 3-0) at St. Martinville (6-3, 3-0)

LAST YEAR: Cecilia won 47-23

THE BUZZ: Cecilia has one more hurdle left in its magical regular season. The Bulldogs’ only loss this season came to an undefeated Crowley team in a 50-49 barnburner, and they can pick up their first district title since being a 3A school in 2008. Raymond Calais, who’s only a little more than 100 yards shy of cracking 2,000 rushing yards, will be a big part of making that happen. But St. Martinville will have something to say about it as home. The upstart Tigers have been impressive defensively this season, allowing just 17.2 points per game. The winner of this game wins the district title outright.
