CECILIA — Landon Roberts put his team in range for a game-winning field goal.
With 25 seconds left and facing fourth-and-long, the Cecilia senior quarterback took the snap and rolled to his right, avoiding multiple Crowley defenders. Roberts turned the corner, threw the ball across his body and found fellow senior Kenya Dartez for a diving 37-yard catch. The home crowd and Bulldogs on the field erupted.
That’s when everyone saw the yellow material back at the line of scrimmage.
In his attempt to escape the pressure, Roberts had crossed the line of scrimmage by a yard, which wiped out the big play and ended a wild game that ended with a 50-49 win for visiting Crowley.
Crowley (3-0) marched downfield on its first possession, highlighted by quarterback Pate Broussard completing three third-down conversions. Broussard capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Marceaux. Running back Ty’Von Griffin rushed for a two-point conversion, giving the Gents an early 8-0 lead.
Cecilia (2-1) responded as star running back Raymond Calais put on an outstanding performance. Calais rushed for a game-high 263 yards on 29 carries and scored rushing touchdowns of 14, 3, 71 and 46 yards. Calais added an 88-yard kickoff return for a score in the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the teams combined for five touchdowns. The first half, which took roughly two hours to play, ended with the score tied at 28.
Cecilia appeared to seize momentum in the third quarter on both sides of the ball and on special teams. The Bulldogs started with an 82-yard touchdown pass from Roberts to Dartez and later added a 46-yard touchdown run by Calais. Plus, Cecilia blocked a field goal attempt and an extra point by Crowley.
Cecilia entered the fourth with a 42-34 lead and extended that with a 4-yard touchdown run by Kyle Guidry early in the final quarter. The Bulldogs appeared to be in control, but the Gents were about to change all that.
After missing a significant stretch of the third, Crowley’s Griffin came up big in the final quarter. He scored a 24-yard touchdown and then punched in the two-point conversion run. Griffin ended the game with 177 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.
Despite that touchdown, Crowley was still trailing 49-42, but the Gents went to the air in the final minutes. Broussard connected with Marceaux once again, and this time it was for a 52-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline that stunned the home crowd. Broussard ended the night 15-of-28 for 351 yards and three touchdowns.
The Gents decided not to play for overtime and went for the two-point conversion. The first attempt ended with the Bulldogs being called for pass interference in the end zone, one of 12 costly penalties on the night. That meant Crowley got another shot, with half the less yardage to hit paydirt. Griffin took the handoff and powered his way into the end zone for his third two-point run of the night.
Cecilia got the ball back with a few timeouts left, but the Bulldogs’ final possession would be minus Calais. The Bulldogs star had apparently gotten banged up on the prior possession and was forced to watch from the sideline in the waning moments.
Moments later, Roberts made the throw to Dartez that wasn’t to be.
