As Catholic High of New Iberia’s undefeated run to the state championship culminates in the Superdome on Friday, so does senior quarterback Jason Pellerin’s career as a Panther.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Ole Miss commitment led his team to the semifinals last year.
The Panthers lost to Calvary Baptist in the Division III select final.
This year, a chance to avenge last year’s loss to the Cavaliers presents itself Friday for Pellerin. Though capable of throwing when needed, Pellerin and the Catholic attack will look to hurt Calvary on the ground with the vaunted Wing T.
Against Newman last week, Pellerin had three rushing touchdowns and against Northlake the week before, he had three more on the ground. Last week, the Panthers attempted just two passes. Catholic Coach Brent Indest said he believes in his Wing-T offense, and Pellerin is the perfect quarterback for it.
Pellerin will try to get outside and run bootlegs, something Newman did a good job of shutting down last week. If Calvary attempts to do the same, Catholic can counter with other weapons like Andre Bellefontaine, who ran for 290 yards and three touchdowns last week.
