Catholic-New Iberia at Vermilion Catholic

7 p.m.

Last year: Catholic-NI won 42-14

The buzz: The Panthers used last season’s big win as a springboard to a season that finished in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. But Catholic will have to figure out a way to play without stud quarterback Jason Pellerin, and a loaded Vermilion Catholic team led by quarterback Hunter Frith will be looking for vengeance at home.

Comeaux at Cecilia

7 p.m.

Last year: Comeaux won 28-20

The buzz: With senior running back Raymond Calais leading the way, Cecilia looks destined for big things after going 4-7 last season. The Bulldogs are hoping to start things off the right way by knocking off a 5A opponent in Comeaux who is playing its first game under coach Doug Dotson.

Mamou at Ville Platte

7 p.m.

Last year: Did not play

The buzz: Ville Platte and Mamou are coming off forgettable 2014 campaigns that saw them go a combined 4-16 overall. The two Evangeline Parish schools aren’t separated by much land, but they haven’t played against each other since the 2012 season.

Hanson at North Vermilion

7 p.m.

Last year: Did not play

The buzz: After three consecutive seasons of losing in the second round of the playoffs, North Vermilion is looking to get off to a good start, which has been an issue lately. The Patriots haven’t won a season opener since the 2009 season.
