MONROE — Finishing undefeated for the second straight season, Catholic High of New Iberia senior Heather Mixon capped her prep career by winning the LHSAA Division III girls singles tennis title.
Top-seeded Mixon also helped CHSNI finish second in the Division III team standings with nine points. University High won the team title with 10 points and Academy of Sacred Heart was third with eight points.
Mixon was the 2014 defending state champion and helped lead CHSNI to its first state girls title. The UL-Lafayette tennis signee advanced to the state semifinals as a sophomore.
Mixon defeated Sacred Heart’s Ashton Rabalais 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, Loyola’s AK Harvey 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals and Iota’s Brittany Johnson 6-2, 6-0 in the finals.
“Heather is very hard worker and very consistent player,” CHSNI coach Vivian Brown said. “She’s always ready to play. She moves well. She hits the ball hard and makes very few errors. She’s improved her speed in the last year.
“We were very satisfied to finish as state runner-up.”
CHSNI also received points from its doubles team of freshman Lauren Mixon and junior Paige Stansberg, who advanced to the quarterfinals. UHigh’s Julia Leonard and Cary Wahlborg took a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Heather Mixon said she was excited to win her second straight state title.
“I was able to play really well, and it’s my senior year,” she said. “There were a lot of good girls out there in the bracket. The strength of my game is my speed and ability to track down balls.”
Mixon also defeated Johnson for the regional title.
“I got more shots back than she was expecting,” she said of the final. “My conditioning is good, so I want to make them hit another shot.”
“I’m really proud of our team this year. Our doubles team did great. We all played well.”
Parkview Baptist won the Division III boys title with 10 points. St. Frederick took the Division IV girls title with 11 points and Newman won the Division IV boys title.
