The Madison Prep boys and the North Central girls swept the major honors on the Class 1A all-state team picked by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
North Central defeated Vermilion Catholic 54-50 to win the school’s first state championship in the girls final, while Madison Prep completed an unbeaten season against state opponents with a 72-46 victory over Lafayette Christian in the boys title game.
Seniors Jazlyn Robertson of North Central and Brandon Sampson of Madison Prep, both of whom won the Outstanding Player honors in the Class 1A title games, were named Outstanding Player award winners.
Robertson, who helped the Canes reach the Top 28 in each of the past four seasons, averaged 24.7 points and 17.3 rebounds per game.
Sampson, a St. John’s commitment, averaged 15.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists for the Chargers, whom he led to the Class 1A final for the second consecutive year.
North Central’s Vanessa Taylor and Madison Prep’s Jeff Jones were selected as the 1A coaches of the year. Taylor led the Canes to a 30-3 record, which a season-ending 20-game win streak. Jones led the Chargers to a 35-1 record, with their lone loss coming against an out-of-state opponent.
Robertson was joined on the first team by Vermilion Catholic’s Ashailee Brailey (24 points, six rebounds, six assists, five steals), Merryville’s Andrea Cournoyer (34.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists), White Castle’s Skylar O’Bear (18.9 points, 5.0 assists, 4.6 rebounds) and West St. John’s Maya Trench (12.9 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals).
On the second team arre North Central’s Quaniqua Joseph (15.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, four steals), Madison Prep’s Sherry Porter (21.0 points, 3.5 steals, 3.0 rebounds), Arcadia’s Khelsea Foster, West St. John’s JaJuan Nicholas (11.7 points, 5 assists, 2 steals) and Houma Christian’s Dionjhae Thomas (12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists).
Other boys first teamers were: Lafayette Christian’s Kalob Ledoux (16.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists), Country Day’s J.C. Younger (17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists), Arcadia’s Eric Brown (17.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.0 steals) and Northwood-Lena’s Michael Layssard (20.0 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.1 blocks).
On the second team are Lafayette Christian’s Jacob Ledoux (17.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists), Hamilton Christian’s Justin Bartie (21.5 points, 8 rebounds), Madison Prep’s Christion Thompson (12. 1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists), Covenant Christian’s Thomas Drane (20.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, two assists) and Country Day’s Michael Corchiani (14.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists).
