PONCHATOULA — A dominant first half was all unranked Ponchatoula needed to claim a 26-0 victory over top-ranked Acadiana, the defending Class 5A state champion, Friday night.

The Green Wave held the Wreckin’ Rams to one first down and 8 yards of total offense while racing out to a 26-0 lead in the first half lead in the nondistrict 5A game played at PHS.

Acadiana finished with just 78 rushing yards and completed 1-of-4 passes for 6 yards. AHS didn’t get its second first down until nine minutes remained in the game.

Ponchatoula rushed for 140 of its 175 yards in the first half and averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Juan Gross ran for 73 yards on 19 carries and scored one touchdown.

Jeb Kraft was 3-for-6 passing with 77 yards. All three completions went for TDs to Jakyle Holmes, who scored on plays 8, 51 and 18 yards. Kraft also ran for 43 yards.

Linebacker John McGowan helped lead the defense for the Green Wave (2-0). Defensive back David Nichols (interception), defensive back Jalen Pines (fumble recovery) and lineman Jahaziel Lee (fumble recovery) also played key defensive roles.

CROWLEY 34, WESTLAKE 3: In Crowley, the sixth-ranked Gents (2-0) of Class 4A jumped out to a commanding 27-3 halftime lead.

Running back Ty’Von Griffin rushed 17 times for 68 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 1, 7 and 33 yards.

Quarterback Pate Broussard completed 10 of 13 passes for 211 yards with a pair of touchdown passes to Terrell Thomas that covered 10 and 20 yards.

Thomas led the Gents with five catches for 81 yards.

CHURCH POINT 35, IOWA 27: In Iowa, all-purpose back Fred Williams accounted for 206 yards and two touchdowns to keep Church Point (2-0) undefeated.

Williams carried 12 times for 141 yards and a TD. He also caught two passes for 30 yards and a score and returned three kickoffs for 75 yards.

Iowa (0-2) rallied from a 13-0 deficit to tie the game at 13 midway through the third quarter before Church Point took a 29-13 lead with 4:45 left in the game on a pair of touchdowns, a two-point conversion and a safety.

Quarterback Zack Youngblood led Iowa, completing 12 of 19 passes for 170 yards and two TDs. Cole Fleming topped the Jackets with six catches for 127 yards and a score.

KAPLAN 32, VERMILION CATHOLIC 15: In Abbeville, Kaplan (2-0) scored three straight TDs in the second half to take control for a road win.

Julius Johnson ran for 182 yards on 31 carries and scored two TDs for the Pirates. Grant Frick added 115 yards on 24 carries.

Hunter Frith completed 18 of 36 passes for 261 yards, including an 88-yard TD toss to Emile Trahan that started the game. Trahan had 4 catches for 134 yards for VCHS (1-1).

CATHOLIC-NI 24, ERATH 6: In Erath, CHSNI (1-1) jumped out to a 17-0 lead through three quarters.

Dialo Landry connected with Jeremy Touchet on a 96-yard TD pass play that opened the scoring in the second quarter. Seth Pierre scored next on a 13-yard run that made it 14-0. Pierre ran for a game-high 101 yards on 15 carries.

Saint Schwing returned an interception 23 yards for a TD for the winners.
