LAFAYETTE — Top-seeded St. Thomas More had little trouble advancing in the first-round of the Class 4A state playoffs with a 77-24 victory Thursday over No. 32 Assumption.
The Cougars (20-3), who built a comfortable 42-9 halftime advantage, host No. 16 Bossier in next Monday’s regional round.
Halie Seymour was one of three STM players in double figures with 13 points.
Allyson Howard added 12 points and Grace Barrilleaux 10.
Rayne 67, St. Martinville 30: In Rayne, guard Charlesha Dugas scored a game-high 27 points to propel the sixth-seeded Wolves to a lopsided Class 4A playoff win.
Rayne (28-2) advances to host No. 11 Benton, a 40-32 winner over Beau Chene, in next Monday’s regional at 6 p.m.
The Wolves forced 39 turnovers and had 27 steals in building leads of 16-6 in the first quarter and 37-13 by halftime over St. Martinville (17-9).
Amari Collins followed Dugas with 17 and Whitley Larry had 11.
Carencro 70, Minden 53: In Carencro, the No. 12 Bears extended their win streak to six games with a convincing opening-round win in Class 4A action.
Three players scored in double figures with Jakaylon Fils leading the way with 17.
Ava Jones followed with 16, Jada Taylor 15 and Chrissy Brown 9.
Carencro (17-7), which travels to No. 4 Karr in regional action, led 40-24 at halftime.
Vermilion Catholic 57, St. Edmund 43, In Abbeville, Kelly White led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and helped propel the No. 5 Eagles past No. 28 St. Edmund.
Bella Doucet scored 12 points, while Jay Demouchet and Leah Camel each added 11 for VC (24-6) which travels to face No. 21 Homer, a 54-40 winner over No. 12 Basile.
Vermilion Catholic led 20-9 after the first quarter on the strength of nine points from Doucet and extended that margin to 35-15 at halftime.
Victoria McGee, who made four of her team’s seven 3-pointers, had 16 points to pace St. Edmund (10-16).
North Central 70, Elton 29: In LeBeau, the defending Class 1A champions and second-seeded Lady Canes raced out to a 27-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
North Central (25-2) will travel for regional action to No. 18 Oberlin, an upset 55-48 winner over No. 15 Oak Grove.
Latrachaui Tyler (20) and Quaniqua Joseph (19) combined to outscore Elton (11-14) by themselves.
Frandreka Keller added 10 points and Jada Duncantell 9.
