Division I

No. 6 Jesuit (9-2) at no. 3 St. Thomas More (9-1)

Last week: Jesuit defeated St. Augustine 42-13. STM did not play.

The buzz: The bye probably helped STM heal some of the injuries that were problematic at the end of the season. STM’s Will Bellamy has 2,363 passing yards. Trevor Begue has rushed for about 1,000 yards. Jesuit has lost to only Rummel and Ponchatoula.

NO. 7 Teurlings (9-1) at no. 2 Rummel (10-0)

Last week: Teurlings defeated Holy Cross 45-21. Rummel did not play.

The buzz: Game will be 7 p.m. Saturday. Teurlings is seeking its first football playoff title ever. The Rebels have scored more than 30 points in every game. Cole Kelley has 2,696 passing yards. Rummel’s Chase Fourcade has thrown for 1,843 yards. Rummel has held teams to three TD’s or less in seven of 10 games.

Division II

No. 5 E.D. White (8-3) at NO. 4 Notre Dame (8-2)

Last week: E.D. White defeated Loyola Prep 31-6. Notre Dame did not play.

The buzz: The Pioneers have had an extra week to prepare for a second-round game. Notre Dame comes alive during playoff time, but the Pios have a tough opponent in E.D. White.

Division III

NO. 9-Northlake Christian (9-2) at NO. 1 Catholic-New Iberia (10-0)

Last week: Northlake defeated Episcopal 27-21. CHNI did not play.

The buzz: Catholic High is picked by many to reach the state finals in this division. The Panthers have had plenty of time to prepare for Northlake. CHSNI finished a regular season undefeated for the first time since 1966. CHSNI has scored 60 points at least four times this year. Northlake started 6-0.

  • o. 5 Newman (10-1) at No. 4 Opelousas Catholic (10-1)

Last week: Newman defeated Redemptorist 56-30. OC defeated Westminster Christian 35-0.

The buzz: OC eliminated Newman last season in a first-round game played in New Orleans. OC has been tough defensively all year, but the Vikings will have to contend with Newman’s Kendall Bussey Jr., who has gained over 1,200 yards.

Division IV

NO. 1 Vermilion Catholic (9-1) at No. 9 Madison Prep (7-4)

Last week: Madison Prep defeated Ascension Catholic 36-18. Vermilion Catholic defeated Houma Christian 48-20.

The buzz: VC is making another playoff run. Madison Prep lost three of the last five.

No. 5 Southern Lab (6-5) NO. 8 Ascension Episcopal (8-3)

Last week: Southern Lab defeated St. Frederick 53-0. AES defeated Hamilton Christian 21-16.

The buzz: Coach Michael Desormeaux got his first playoff win last week against a good team. Quarterback Jake Arceneaux got the Gators on the scoreboard with three long touchdown passes. Southern Lab is another tough, athletic opponent. Lab has won five straight.

No. 6 Ouachita Christian (8-3) No. 3 Central Catholic (9-2)

Last week: Ouachita Christian defeated Covenant Christian 56-21. CCMC defeated Delhi Charter 12-8.

The buzz: Tommy Minton got his first playoff win at Central Catholic, but Ouachita Christian brings in a playoff-tested program. CCMC reached the quarterfinals last season. Ouachita Christian has won five of the past six.

No. 7 St. Edmund (7-3) at no. 2 St. Mary’s (10-1)

Last week: St, Edmund defeated Country Day 44-31. St. Mary’s defeated Hanson 35-13.

The buzz: This game matches two explosive offenses that score by different means. St. Edmund’s offense has produced nearly 3,700 yards. St. Mary’s relies on a Wing T offense, with Hunter Bedgood running the ball.


Class 5A

No. 15 Acadiana (7-4) at No. 2 Ponchatoula (11-0)

Last week: Acadiana defeated St. Amant 37-0. Ponchatoula defeated South Lafourche 76-22.

The buzz: The Rams have discovered a quarterback in Kevin Moore who completed all five of his passes and rushed for 74 yards last week. Ponchatoula has been ranked No. 1 in Class 5A’s weekly polls for most of the season. Ponchatoula’s Hank Tierney has his team giving up fewer than 14 points a game. Acadiana eliminated Ponchatoula last year.

Class 4A

No. 14 Rayne (9-2) at No. 3 Franklinton (10-1)

Last week: Rayne defeated Leesville 36-22. Franklinton defeated Washington-Marion 34-0.

The buzz: Rayne will challenge Franklinton with its superior running game. Franklinton has one of the state’s largest offensive lines and has won nine straight. The problem for Rayne is stopping Franklinton’s multidimensional offense.

No. 15 Breaux Bridge (8-3) at No. 2 Neville (9-1)

Last week: Breaux Bridge defeated West Ouachita 41-14. Neville defeated Riverdale 57-7.

The buzz: It’s tough to win at Neville, especially during the playoffs. Breaux Bridge has an excellent defense. Last week the Tigers divided the offensive rushing among Marquis Demonter, Rueben Hypolite and Javin Derouselle. Neville is playing only its fifth home game.

Class 3A

No. 13 Kaplan (8-3) at No. 4 Union Parish (10-1)

Last week: Kaplan defeated Northwest 44-27. Union Parish defeated Madison 44-6.

The buzz: Union Parish is a tough draw, especially in Farmerville. The Pirates have won eight of the past nine games. Last week Julius Johnson rushed for 180 yards. Union Parish beat Kaplan in a quarterfinal last year.

No. 11-Jennings (8-3) at No. 27 North Vermilion (5-6)

Last week: Jennings defeated Miller-McCoy 31-12. North Vermilion defeated Buckeye 24-20.

The buzz: North Vermilion has come alive the last few weeks. The Patriots have a home playoff game against a difficult opponent in Jennings, a senior-dominant team that reached the semifinals last year.

No. 10 Loranger (7-4) at No. 7 Patterson (8-3)

Last week: Loranger defeated Bogalusa 35-7. Patterson defeated Richwood 56-18.

The buzz: Patterson started the season with three losses, but since then the Lumberjacks have shown they have it together. Loranger started the season 1-3.

No. 15 North Webster (8-3) at No. 2 Church Point (10-1)

Last week: North Webster defeated Marksville 49-18. Church Point defeated Brusly 42-7.

The buzz: For Church Point it comes down to stopping North Webster’s Devin White, who gained 235 yards last week against Marksville. The Knights also have an aggressive defense that could bother the Bears.

Class 2A

No. 8 Loreauville (7-4) at No. 9 St. James (7-4)

Last week: Loreauville defeated Jonesboro-Hodge 40-0. St. James defeated G.W. Carver 26-18.

The buzz: Loreauville had 501 yards last week. Jarod Henry completed all but two of his 17 passes against Jonesboro-Hodge. St. James has won five straight.

Class 1A

No. 12 LaSalle 7-4 at No. 5 Basile (9-1)

Last week: LaSalle defeated South Cameron 34-0. Basile did not play.

The buzz: Basile has a playoff-tested, senior-dominated team that reached the quarterfinals last season and finished 11-1. The Bearcats are determined to advance beyond that this year. LaSalle has lost three of the past six and two straight.
