Two players who helped set the tone for their teams to win state championships, Zach Rider of Kinder and Jensen Howell of Menard, lead the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-State teams for baseball and softball.
Rider, who was 8-0 on the mound for a Kinder squad that won its second straight 2A baseball title, was voted Outstanding Player on the LSWA baseball squad. The McNeese signee is a two-time LSWA state Outstanding Player honoree.
Howell garnered the Outstanding Player honors for softball after helping the Eagles to a state title. She batted .341 with 25 RBIs and was a top pitcher for Menard but made the all-district and LSWA teams as an infielder.
Oak Grove’s Ty Rollinson is the LSWA baseball Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers a runner-up finish in 2A. Lyn Bankston of Winnfield, the 2A softball runner-up, was picked as the softball Coach of the Year. A panel of sportswriters from across the state selected the teams.
The 2A all-state softball pitchers were Winnfield junior Anna Beth Johnson (13-4), Many junior Caroline Settle (216 strikeouts), Menard senior Kayla Busby (11-3), and Calvary Baptist sophomore Sarah Chamberlain (20-5).
Howell is joined in the infield by Rosepine sophomore catcher Lauryn McMahon (.408 avg.), Kinder senior Megan Trahan (.568 avg.), Menard sophomore Maddie Smith (.340 avg.) and Hannan senior Hailey Tassin (.439 avg.).
The outfield consists of Catholic-New Iberia senior Payton LeBlanc (.345 avg.), Hannan junior Jensen Volz (.530 avg.), and Kinder senior Keisha Daniels (.480 avg.). Riverside senior Erica Delauneville (.478 avg.), Hannan sophomore Shaye Tredinich (.440 avg.), Winnfield junior Kasey James (.390 avg.) and Opelousas Catholic sophomore Tori Collins (.400 avg.) made the team as utility players.
Doyle’s Tyler Pigott made the team as a pitcher. Pigott was 9-1 with a 0.83 earned run average and 106 strikeouts in 83 innings. Johnny Johnson of Runnels made the team as an infielder by batting .430 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. Redemptorist’s Jacob Stagg (.365, six doubles), Dunham’s Alec Duhe (7-3, .425 batting average) and Doyle’s Hilton Savoy (8-1) made the team as utility players.
Also joining Rider on the baseball all-state team was Rosepine senior pitcher Jesse Fruge (5-3) and Lakeside sophomore pitcher Cameron Gray. The infield includes Riverside junior catcher Brandon Morris (.371 avg.), Rosepine senior Kane Bass (.455 avg.), Kinder senior Dylon Poncho (.513 avg.) and Riverside sophomore Mason Vicknair (.403 avg.).
St. Thomas Aquinas junior Reed Bolton (.410 avg.), Oak Grove senior Wyatt Martin (.453 avg.) and Riverside junior Tyler Gauthier (.377 avg.) are the outfielders. Oak Grove senior Chase Cockrell (.420 avg.) is the other utility player.
