CARENCRO — Trevor Begue and William Bellamy had gone silent.
The St. Thomas More wide receiver and quarterback made plenty of noise in the first half of Friday’s District 4-4A matchup as the senior duo connected on spectacular touchdowns of 48, 16 and 56 yards to build a 21-0 halftime lead.
After failing to connect in a scoreless third quarter, the pair changed that in the fourth.
Carencro had made it a one-possession game early in the final period, and that’s when Begue and Bellamy made some noise. Begue beat the single coverage down the right sideline and Bellamy found him for a 67-yard touchdown.
That helped the Cougars ice a hard-fought 28-13 victory over the Golden Bears.
STM (6-1, 2-0) needed a mere 45 seconds — and four plays — to get on the score board as Bellamy found Begue for the first of three first-half scores. Bellamy ended the first half completing 8 of 10 passes for 200 yards, while Begue pulled down five receptions for 136 yards.
Begue ended the night with 215 yards on nine receptions and now has 12 receiving touchdowns on the season.
STM’s defense was doing its part as well as Carencro struggled on offense. The Bears had a pair of three-and-outs and a turnover on their first three drives.
Senior running back Tyreik Campbell entered the game averaging 7.6 yards per carry but was held to 36 yards on 10 carries in the first half. STM also managed to shut down Carencro’s passing attack in the first half as Golden Bears quarterback Gabe Duffy was 3-of-8 for 11 yards in the first two quarters.
Carencro (4-3, 1-1) finally cut into STM’s lead with a methodical 14-play, 64-yard scoring drive late in the third. The drive featuring plenty of Campbell running for tough yards, and was capped with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Duffy.
After being bottled up in the first half, Campbell ended the game with 112 yards on 22 carries and eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
Carencro got in reach of tying the game after Rashaad Harding caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Carl Randall. The extra point was no good but the Golden Bears were in striking distance at 21-13.
Moments later, the ensuing STM possession saw Bellamy and Begue hook up for their fourth and final touchdown of the contest, a 67-yard strike.
STM plays at crosstown rival Teurlings Catholic next Friday while Carencro plays at Northside.
