EUNICE — It took a bit of time to get there, but Eunice scored two late touchdowns in a matter of minutes to pull away for a 56-25 win over Northwest in front of a capacity crowd at Bobcat Field on Friday night.

Both teams missed early chances to score as Eunice lost a fumble on its opening drive of the game, and Northwest turned the ball over on downs after gaining posession.

The Bobcats took over at their own 22 to set up the game’s first score as Eunice’s Darin Serie and Travis Godfrey picked up first downs. Quarterback Alex Richard later hit Serie for another first down to the Raider 37. Nick Powell carried for another first down to the Raider 20 to set up Richard’s score on a keeper for a 7-0 lead with 2:58 to play in the first quarter.

But that lead didn’t last long as Northwest’s Chris Lee returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to the Eunice 7. Two plays later, Matthew Rideau scored to tie the score.

Later, Richard completed a pass to Brandon Nubuzyze, who fumbled, allowing the Raiders to take over at the Bobcat 29. The Raiders capitalized on the turnover by scoring a touchdown to go up 13-7.

The Bobcats began their next drive at their own 45, and on third-and-5 from midfield, Powell busted a 14-yard run to the Raider 36. Eunice converted another third down to the 26, but a holding call nullified the gain.

But it didn’t matter as Powell scored to give the Bobcats a 14-13 lead on the successful point after attempt with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter.

The Raiders answered again as Abraham Gordwin returned the kickoff to the Eunice 14 to set up Lee’s touchdown to put Northwest up 19-14.

Eunice later forced the Raiders to go three-and-out to set up another Powell touchdown run — this time from 3 yards out — to go up 21-19 with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter.

Powell scored again on a 2-yard run to put Eunice up 28-19. Northwest recovered a fumble and scored touchdown from 18 yards out to cut the lead to 28-25 late in the third quarter.

The Bobcats, however, scored two touchdowns to put the game away.

One of those scores came on a punt attempt as the ball sailed over the head of the Eunice punter, who jumped up and caught the ball, scrambled for a few yards, then lateraled to an alert Bobcat receiver, who sprinted down the left side for a 51-yard touchdown.
