WHO: Left-handed pitcher Cody Boutte
POSTSEASON: Boutte had one shaky inning but shut out Mississippi State in his other five innings in the regional, striking out four and leaving with a 14-3 lead.
SCOUTING REPORT: The word commonly used to describe Boutte is “crafty,” and location is hugely important, because he won’t overpower anyone with a mid-80s fastball.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Cajuns coach Tony Robichaux: “Boutte has been terrific for us. We needed someone to step in and be that third starter, and he’s been outstanding.”
WHO: Right-handed pitcher Sam Smith
POSTSEASON: Smith didn’t give up an earned run and scattered six hits before being lifted in the fifth inning in the regional title game against Washington.
SCOUTING REPORT: The former Barbe standout struggled late, allowing 17 runs in 21 innings before the regional. But he has a lively if not overpowering fastball and an out-pitch slider.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco: “For Sam to have success, he has to command the ball. He had that against Washington, and that was good to see.”
