NORTHWESTERN STATE 89, UL-LAFAYETTE 85: In Natchitoches, Louisiana-Lafayette got 23 points and 19 rebounds from Devonta Walker, but could not hold off an enthusiastic Northwestern State on Saturday, falling 89-85 to the Demons at Prather Coliseum.

The loss was the Cajuns’ (6-5) first to the Demons (4-5) since 1971, snapping an eight-game win streak in the series.

Walker picked up his first double-double as a Cajun, adding five assists to his total, and was joined in double figures by four teammates. Kasey Shepherd continued to show well offensively with an 18-point outing that included two of the Cajuns four 3-pointers. Jay Wright added 12 points and three assists, and Xavian Rimmer and Brian Williams had 10 points apiece.

UL-Lafayette lost for the first time this year when out-rebounding an opponent, owning a 49-38 edge, and pulling in 20 offensive rebounds. Walker led all players with his 19 rebounds, while Shawn Long had 13.

Jalan West and Marvin Frazier each put up double-doubles for the Demons, with West dishing out 10 assists to go with 19 points, and Frazier pulling down 11 rebounds with 15 points. But it was Zeek Woodley who paced the Demon scoring a team-best 20 points.

Walker had his double-double in the first 20 minutes of play with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, but the Cajuns were not able to hold onto an early 10-point lead that was taken on the strength of an 11-0 run.

Shepherd provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, hitting a pair of threes, but two early fouls on Long kept him on the bench for all but five minutes of the opening period.

The Cajuns hit 16 of 21 from the foul line in the second period, but turned the ball over 13 times. Northwestern State built as much as a 10-point lead in the second half.
