LAFAYETTE — The Louisiana-Lafayette soccer team kicks off its season on the road this weekend against two Southland Conference opponents.
UL-Lafayette opens the season against Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Then travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a 4 p.m. Sunday game in Hammond.
The Ragin’ Cajuns are coming off their best season (8-7-3) in program history. UL-Lafayette was just one goal from a regular season title Sun Belt title in 2013. The Ragin’ Cajuns were picked second after receiving 81 points in the 2014 SBC preseason poll, behind last year’s conference champion South Alabama, which totaled 98 points.
Ragin’ Cajuns’ senior defender Grace Howell-Harries was named SBC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after earning the honor following the 2013 season. Joining Howell-Harries with preseason honors were sophomore forwards Yazmin Montoya and Annika Schmidt, who are also coming off all-conference seasons.
Red-White Scrimmage Set For Saturday: The UL-Lafayette volleyball team will give fans their first chance to see this year’s team when it hosts the third-annual Red-White Scrimmage at noon Saturday at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin’ Cajuns went 19-14 last year — its highest win total since 1997.
Preseason all-Sun Belt Conference setter Andrea Hole returns for her senior season to direct the offense. Some of her main targets will be junior outside hitter Sara Mossakowski, and seniors Kaylee Nemeth and Kelly Wiesmann. Other returnees include senior libero Caitlyn Auxilien and middle blocker Chanelle Gardner.
