Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas State appeared evenly matched in Sunday's doubleheader that opened the softball series between the teams atop the Sun Belt Conference.
No. 24 Texas State, the league leader, scored all of the game's runs in the eighth inning in a 4-0 extra-inning victory in Game 1, and No. 21 UL-Lafayette answered with a 5-1 victory in the second game, handing the Bobcats their first league loss.
The Bobcats (31-9, 12-1 Sun Belt) and Ragin' Cajuns (27-11, 13-4) will play the weather-delayed series' rubber game at 11 a.m. Monday at Lamson Park.
The Sun Belt's ERA leaders coming in put on a show in the first game, with Texas State's Randi Rupp and UL-Lafayette's Summer Ellyson staging a classic pitchers' duel. Ellyson didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and just one through seven, but Rupp worked out of several jams to match her zero for zero.
In the eighth inning, Brianna Sannem broke through with a pinch-hit, two-out RBI double. Hailey MacKay followed with a three-run home run to provide cushion.
Alissa Dalton, Kourtney Gremillion and Brittany Rodriguez were each 2 for 4 for the Cajuns. Ellyson struck out eight.
In the second game, UL-Lafayette wasted no time in responding to the dramatic Game 1 loss, stringing together five hits in the first inning off of Texas State starter Meagan King. Lexie Comeaux and Jolie Readeaux had back-to-back two-out RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats struck back with a run in the second inning, but Cajuns starter Kylee Jo Trahan didn't give them anything else, scattering five hits and striking out six in a complete game in her first Sun Belt start of the season.
Gremillion was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, including a two-run double that extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. Gremillion has eight hits in her past three games, including a 4-for-4 night on Tuesday against Southeastern.
