UL-Lafayette’s softball team will have to wait until Sunday to try to extend its three-game win streak to start the season.

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ contest with Eastern Illinois was suspended by rain in the top of the fifth inning in Saturday’s second game of the Mardi Gras Classic tournament, and continued rains forced postponement of the rest of the schedule on the tournament’s third day.

Play will resume Sunday with games moved to the turf fields at the Broussard Sports Complex at St. Julien Park, located at 701 St. Nazaire Road in Broussard. The suspended game between UL-Lafayette and Eastern Illinois will begin at 9 a.m. followed by Eastern Illinois facing Evansville on one field. A second field will pit Iowa against Illinois-Chicago at 9 a.m. and the Cajuns against Iowa at 11 a.m. There will be no admission charge for the Sunday games.

UL-Lafayette trailed EIU 3-0 after one inning on Haley Mitchell’s RBI single and a pair of unearned runs, but the Cajuns cut the margin to 3-1 on Aeriyl Mass’ leadoff triple and Brittany Rodriguez’ ground ball. The Cajuns then pushed across four runs on five hits in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Beth Ashley and Kelli Martinez, Mass’ sacrifice fly and an error that scored another run.

Rain had begun in the third inning and umpires finally halted the game with one out in the top of the fifth. Eastern Illinois had taken a 4-0 win over Samford in Saturday’s opening game before the rest of the schedule was rained out.
