LAFAYETTE — The Sun Belt Conference home-opening series is two days away, but UL-Lafayette’s softball team will open a four-game homestand Thursday when the Ragin’ Cajuns face Florida International at Lamson Park.
The 6 p.m. single game against the Panthers (14-14) is the final mid-week home game for the Cajuns, who open their Sun Belt home slate Saturday-Sunday against Appalachian State.
The Cajuns (14-6) are coming off a series win at Coastal Carolina last weekend to open league play, winning two games and losing one by identical 4-2 scores with freshmen pitchers Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell getting all three decisions.
“You’re going to see a lot more of our two freshmen now that we’ve seen what they’re capable of,” Cajuns coach Gerry Glasco said. “Summer Ellyson is still going to get two starts in these four games, but having the freshmen takes a little pressure off everyone else.”
Ellyson (5-3, 1.94 ERA) will likely draw Thursday’s start against FIU, while senior Kylee Jo Trahan (3-1) will share pitching duties with Dixon (4-1) and Boswell (2-1) in Saturday’s 2 p.m. doubleheader and Sunday’s 11 a.m. series finale. The final game was moved up from a scheduled 1 p.m. start to accommodate travel.
FIU, which faced McNeese in a Wednesday night game and will travel to meet La. Tech in a weekend series, lost two of three at home to UTSA over the weekend.
