1 Sophomore Grant Horst and junior college transfer Eddie Gordon started their battle for the starting center job Monday. Coach Mark Hudspeth said he hopes to have a little clearer picture of who might start after Saturday’s scrimmage.
2 Construction in and around Cajun Field has led to some obstacles for the team to work around during fall camp, leaving some areas muddy and closing off half of one of the Cajuns’ practice fields. But Hudspeth said the obstacles were welcome, because they were a sign of the program’s progress.
3 For the first time in Hudspeth’s four-year tenure, the Cajuns have an even split between home and away games. That’s a welcome sight for a team that’s played six more road games (21) than home games (15) the last three years.
4 Who’s a good candidate to replace Darryl Surgent’s speed at the wide receiver position? He’s raw, but offensive coordinator Jay Johnson pointed out sophomore Devin Scott’s speed as a weapon the Cajuns could use.
5 If only I had one of those handheld clicker counters. The three coaches who spoke about the Cajuns’ upcoming season must have used the word “excited” 50 times in roughly 30 minutes of news conferences.
