WACO, Texas — Lexie Elkins had three hits and three RBIs, and Shelbi Redfearn had four hits as the Louisiana-Lafayette softball team swept host Baylor 5-2 and 7-4 on Tuesday.
The Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 35-7-1. They beat Baylor (32-12) 11-10 in February at the Gulfport College Classic.
Christina Hamilton picked up her 19th win in the opener, tossing a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out seven.
Baylor’s Holly Holl broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, snapping a 16-inning shutout streak for Hamilton, with a solo home run. After allowing a single on the next batter, Hamilton got a ground out, a pop up and a strikeout to get out of her first jam of the game.
The Cajuns would take the lead in the next half-inning. Natalie Fernandez reached on an error to lead the inning off and came around to score on a Haley Hayden double. Elkins broke the tie in the next at-bat, hitting her 14th home run to make it 3-1.
Both teams jumped on the scoreboard early in Game 2. The Cajuns got a first-inning run after an RBI single from Shellie Landry, scoring Hayden, and the Bears tied it up in the bottom of the inning, stealing home during a rundown.
The Cajuns took the lead in the third with three runs, coming on a pair of doubles by Elkins and Shelbi Redfearn, along with an error to make it 4-1.
The Cajuns return to conference play with a trip to Sun Belt newcomer Texas-Arlington. The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and the series finale at noon Sunday.
