LAFAYETTE —The University of Louisiana at Lafayette women’s basketball team will get its final preseason tune-up when the Cajuns host Spring Hill College at 7 p.m. Monday at the Cajundome. Admission is free.
In Wednesday’s exhibition opener, Keke Veal led the Cajuns with 18 points. Kia Wilridge added 15, Gabby Alexander 14 and Simone Fields 10 in a 69-44 win over LSU-Alexandria.
UL-Lafayette opens the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at Lamar in Beaumont, Texas. The Cajuns’ home opener tips off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, against Xavier of New Orleans in the Cajundome.
The Cajuns return eight letter-winners and four starters from last season, including leading scorer Brooklyn Arceneaux, a junior guard/forward.
Arceneaux was third team All-Sun Belt last season after averaging 10.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, but she will sit out the first half of the season to recover from ACL surgery.
Junior guard Veal was named to the All-SBC preseason second team, and Kia was selected to the third team. Veal averaged 11.9 points, 3.1 steals and 2.5 assists through the first 13 games before she suffered a season-ending injury. Wilridge averaged 9.0 points, a team-high 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals.
Spring Hill is in the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The Badgers will compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference but will not be eligible for NCAA postseason play until 2016-17. The Badgers are coming off a 5-23 season.
