LAFAYETTE – The Ragin’ Cajuns officially added the newest member of their coaching staff Tuesday when they announced the hiring of Mike Lucas as defensive backs coach.
“We’re excited to have someone with Mike Lucas’ experience joining our staff,” said Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth in a news release. “He is known as a great recruiter and has great ties in the state of Louisiana from being a head coach and has great recruiting ties in the state of Texas. He will be a great fit and a tremendous asset to our program and we’re excited for him and his wife (Wendy) in joining our Ragin’ Cajuns family.”
Lucas spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern State, where his Demons finished 6-6, including an upset win against Louisiana Tech. Lucas also spent five seasons as Southeastern Louisiana’s head coach, where he won Louisiana Collegiate Coach of the Year honors in 2009.
Lucas is taking over for Tim Rebowe, who accepted the head job at Nicholls State after spending 10 years as an assistant with UL-Lafayette.
The Cajuns still have two spots to fill on their coaching staff after they parted ways with defensive line coach Tim Edwards and outside linebackers coach Matt Wallerstedt. A report from Sports Illustrated indicated Wallerstedt was set to take over as Charlotte’s defensive coordinator.
