STATESBORO, Ga. — The Louisiana-Lafayette softball team claimed the Sun Belt Conference championship and the league tournament’s No. 1 seed with a doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southern on Saturday.
The No. 8-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (37-6, 18-1 Sun Belt) captured the championship outright in a 12-1 win in the second game after taking the tournament’s top seed with a 5-0 win the day’s first game.
The Cajuns won the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship for the third straight season and for the 14th time in the 16 seasons the league has held regular-season competition.
LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 5, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 0: The Cajuns broke a scoreless tie with a five-run third, highlighted by a two-run double from DJ Sanders and two-run single by Kara Gremillion.
Haley Hayden finished 2-for-4 to post her team-leading 15th multiple-hit game of the season.
Alex Stewart struck out eight, and allowed one hit to remain undefeated in Sun Belt play (12-0) and combined with Macey Smith for the shutout.
Stewart was involved in a shutout for the 10th time this season (five solo, five combined) and reached eight strikeouts for the eighth time this season.
LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 12, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 1: The Cajuns broke a scoreless tie with a five-run third.
Sara Corbello’s first home run of the game helped the Cajuns to a 3-0 lead, and Corbello finished 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs, setting a season-high total for both and tying her career-highs. It was her first multiple-home run game since May 4, 2013, at ULM and first three-hit game since March 2014 against Chattanooga in Gulfport, Miss.
Sanders belted her second grand slam of the season (and the team’s sixth) in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 12-0.
Stewart (22-3) gave up four hits and struck out one to get the win, while Smith gave up a hit, a walk and a run in an inning of relief for the Cajuns.
Kierra Camp (6-11) struck out one, walked six and gave up nine runs on five hits to take the loss for Georgia Southern (28-24, 11-9).
