LAFAYETTE – Andrea Brodhead, wife of Louisiana-Lafayette women’s basketball coach Garry Brodhead, died Thursday evening after losing a battle to cancer.
Andrea had been sick for at least the last year, as Garry did not travel with his team for several road trips for what the school described as a family situation last season. Brodhead and his family had been making several trips to M.D. Anderson in Houston for much of the last year.
Recently, Andrea’s health took a turn for the worse as the cancer spread.
Andrea and Garry both come from the Acadiana area, and both have been influential promoting women’s basketball in Lafayette.
They co-founded the Acadiana Stars AAU team in 1987 to spread the game in south Louisiana, and it’s still operating today.
Andrea stayed in Lafayette and with the kids when Garry took a job to be an assistant on the McNeese State women’s basketball team, a job he took to gain the college experience necessary to one day man the post he currently holds.
Andrea leaves behind Garry and their three children, Blair, Ashley and Beau.
