STATESBORO, Ga. — A pair of solo home runs and a shutout from Dixie Raley lifted the Georgia Southern softball team to a 2-0 win over No. 8 Louisiana-Lafayette in the series finale Sunday.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (37-7, 18-2 Sun Belt) pressured Raley in the second and third innings by loading the bases, but she managed to escape and keep the game scoreless.
The Eagles (29-24, 12-9) grabbed the lead on a two-out home run by Emily Snider against Cajuns pitcher Alex Stewart in the third. The hosts extended their lead to 2-0 when AJ Hamilton led off the fourth with a home run.
After that, Victoria Brown pitched three scoreless innings to hold the Cajuns’ deficit at two. Raley matched her by working around a one-out single from DJ Sanders in the sixth and a two-out error in the seventh.
The loss snapped the Cajuns’ 14-game Sun Belt winning streak. The Cajuns entered the day with the series win secured — their 28th consecutive in Sun Belt play — after a Saturday sweep secured the outright regular-season conference title.
Stewart (22-4) was charged with her first Sun Belt loss of the season, falling to 13-1. Raley (22-11) collected 16 fly ball outs and surrendered just three hits for the shutout.
The Cajuns host UL-Monroe Saturday and Sunday at Lamson Park to close regular-season play. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 2 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
