LAFAYETTE — Elijah McGuire added yet another preseason accolade to his résumé Thursday when the Louisiana-Lafayette running back was named one of 69 players to the Doak Walker Award watch list.
The Doak Walker Award has been given annually to the nation’s top running back for the past 25 years. It’s the third major watch list McGuire’s landed on this month. He was also put on watch lists for the Paul Hornung Award and Maxwell Award.
The junior running back ran for 1,264 yards and 14 TDs last season on his way to becoming the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
Georgia Southern’s Matt Breida, Troy’s Brandon Burks, Texas State’s Robert Lowe Appalachian State’s Marcus Cox and Arkansas State’s Michael Gordon also made the watch list from the SBC. LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon were the other Louisiana representatives on the list.
After only two seasons, McGuire is the seventh-leading rusher in school history with 2,127 yards, but he’s also been a threat in the passing game. McGuire caught a team-high 45 passes last season, establishing a school record for running backs.
