Hurricane season begins; 8 years without a major storm _lowres

It only takes one storm to change a life or a community, the National Weather Service notes.

For Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 7-13, the Weather Service is encouraging anyone living in an area prone to tropical weather to get educated and prepared for whatever hurricane season may bring.

Hurricane season starts June 1.
