Gonzales-based infant products maker Crown Crafts Inc. reported net income of $1.5 million, or 16 cents per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2012, roughly double the $775,000, or 8 cents per share, reported a year earlier.

Crown Crafts’ third quarter ended Jan. 1.

Sales were flat at $21.6 million.

E. Randall Chestnut, Crown chairman, president and chief executive officer, said the company’s improved results resulted, in part, from moving some of the higher-cost merchandise in its inventory.

The company was also able to take advantage of lower production costs due to lower raw material prices, re-engineering some products and moving away from an unprofitable private label bedding line.
