The U.S. Coast Guard closed a portion of the lower Mississippi River near the north Louisiana community of Transylvania on Thursday after a coal barge sunk inside the channel, according to a Coast Guard press release.

At about 1:30 a.m., the Coast Guard received a call that while the UTV Sally Bromfield towing vessel was pushing 35 barges, there was a breakaway near Transylvania and the coal barge sank.

Transylvania is located mostly in East Carroll Parish.

One barge is partially under water and eight other barges were damaged. The damaged barges have been placed in a location out of the navigation channel, according to the Coast Guard.

The lower Mississippi River will remain closed from mile marker 469 to mile marker 464 in north Louisiana until the river is determined safe for navigation, according to the Coast Guard.
