For the first time, the federal government will hold a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System at 1 p.m. today.
The test is being done by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Federal Communications Commission and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and will last about 30 seconds.
The test will be on all radio, television, cable television and satellite radio, according to FEMA. The test won’t involve land-line phones or cell phones.
A national alert has never been issued before and the testing is designed to see if the system will work if such an alert is ever needed, according to FEMA.
