Police have arrested a man accused of shooting a police officer just before midnight on Sycamore Street, according to a Baton Rouge Police Department news release.
Michael Anthony Joseph, 41, 4237 Gurney Road was taken into custody at his home Thursday morning, Police Sgt. Don Kelly said in an news release. Joseph will be booked with attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, illegal use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, Kelly said.
The officer was not injured but one of the bullets reportedly fired by Joseph struck the officer in the chest. The officer was wearing body armor which protected him from injury. The officer’s wireless lapel microphone was destroyed. The officer, returned fire but Joseph was not hit, Kelly said.
The shooting occurred at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of Sycamore Street, which is located north of Evangeline Street and south of Hollywood Street.
The officer who was shot is 29 and is a four-year-veteran assigned to the Patrol Division.
