Driving up to the gated entrance to Spanish Lakes on Nicholson Drive south of LSU, you’d never expect to be able to buy a home here for as little as $149,900. At that price, you’d also never expect to have access to a pair of fountained lakes, curb-and-gutter streets, sidewalks, cast iron mailboxes and New Orleans style lamp posts to guide your way at night.

But these amenities and more are waiting behind the gates at Spanish Lakes, on the east side of Nicholson Drive just past Bayou Paul Lane in St. Gabriel. Spanish Lakes, a development by Destiny Interests’ David Law and Clayton Mitchell, is a chance for buyers to get lots of luxury and security at an affordable price.

Two-bedroom homes start at $149,000, three-bedroom homes start at $164,900, and you can get into a four-bedroom home for just $199,900 in Spanish Lakes. Builder packages can be constructed in 120 days or less, according to Darrell and Iris Davis, the C.J. Brown agents marketing homes in the development.

If you have your own plans and builder, lots start as low as $39,900 and go up to $48,900 for lots on one of the subdivision’s two lakes. Individual plans are subject to approval by the neighborhood association, Darrell Davis said. There are a total of 159 lots in Spanish Lakes, and 49 are already sold, pending, or have construction ongoing, he said. Property in Spanish Lakes is eligible for rural development money, Davis added. There are currently nine homes in Spanish Lakes that are complete and ready for occupancy, Davis said. Also, two model homes are currently available for viewing. Buyers who select a builder’s package can choose from seven different models, he said.

One of the four bedroom models is at 1320 Madrid Ave., a beautiful stucco home with a double front-loading garage and nice landscaping. The entrance takes you directly into the living room, which is floored in 20-inch ceramic tile. Ahead is the breakfast room, which has a five-light fixture above and a pair of windows to the rear covered patio. The exit to the patio is convenient to the breakfast room as well as the kitchen.

The kitchen features a twolevel slab granite island with electric outlets. There’s also painted cabinetry, a double stainless sink with a disposal, and ceramic tile counters. The appliance package is Frigidaire, and includes a glass-top electric range and oven, a microwave and a dishwasher. Recessed lights, crown molding in the living room and 9-foot ceilings are added features in each home. Spanish Lakes homes also have oil-rubbed bronze fixtures and are pre-wired for security systems, Davis said.

The carpeted master bedroom in the four-bedroom model is in the back of the home, with a ceiling fan and windows to the back yard. Ceramic tile floors the master bath, which has a pair of cultured marble vanities, a big frosted window, a walk-in shower, a 6-foot soaker tub and a single large closet with shelving.

Meanwhile, the home’s laundry room is larger than you’d expect, and has a separate broom closet. Just down a short hall from the kitchen to the two-car garage are the home’s three other bedrooms, one on the right and two on the left, separated by a full bath. The bath here has two vanities and a tub/ shower combination. Attic access is located in the hall.

If the secret to real estate is “location, location, location,” Spanish Lakes has to be ideal for young professionals and working couples, Davis said. The Essen Lane medical corridor is not far north, LSU is close by and numerous area plants are just to the south.

Davis said he will keep the model homes open today from 1-5 p.m. to give everyone a chance to see what’s available in beautiful Spanish Lakes.
