A Baton Rouge political consultant has won the $1 million prize in the 13th annual National Handicapping Championship at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, according to the National Thoroughbread Racing Association.

Michael Beychok edged out Dave Flanzbaum of Rolling Meadows, Ill. During the two-day tournament, 480 competitors selected 30 $2 win-and-place bets. Beychock never led in the contest until the final race, when his pick won by a nose.

Beychok’s total of $238.60 was $1 higher than Flanzbaum’s.
