House where boy shot himself destroyed by arsonist

The same house on Iroquois Street where a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself with his father’s handgun on Feb. 8 was destroyed by an arsonist early Thursday morning.

Firefighters got a call Thursday at 1:31 a.m. with a report of a fire at 2944 Iroquois St., according to a Baton Rouge Fire Department news release.

That is the same address where police believe Shawn Dean Sr. left a handgun out and within the reach of 4-year-old Shawn Dean Jr. who grabbed the weapon and shot himself in the head, Baton Rouge Police have said.

The boy’s 26-year-old father was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and felon in possession of a firearm, police have said.

The shooting occurred while the boy’s father was running an errand and his mother was sleeping, police have said.

The father hid the gun before police arrived but it was later found in a field near the family’s home. The fatal shooting is still under investigation.

According to the fire department’s news release, when firefighters arrived at the home Thursday, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

According to the release, it’s the second time the Iroquois Street home has been ignited this week.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the fire department at (225) 354-1419.
