GONZALES - The Ascension Parish School Board's insurance committee is recommending that the school district add properties to its flood insurance coverage, following the catastrophic floods of August.

Four of the five schools that flooded were covered by flood insurance. Galvez Middle, however, did not.

The School Board's insurance committee last month asked its flood insurance company, Hughes Insurance Services of Gonzales, to look into the cost of providing coverage for more schools considered to have a possible risk for future flooding.

At its meeting Tuesday, insurance committee members learned that, for an annual insurance premium increase of approximately $200,000 — from about $272,000 to $478,000 — flood insurance could be added for additional buildings at St. Amant High School, St. Amant Middle and Lake Elementary and be provided for the previously uninsured schools of Galvez Middle, Sorrento Primary, Central Middle, Lowery Elementary/Middle and the APPLe Digital Academy.

The school district's maintenance building and data center also would be covered under the premium increase.

Bret Hughes, with the insurance company, told board members that flood insurance is providing $4.1 million toward repair of the four flooded schools that had insurance.

The full School Board is expected to vote on the proposed premium increase at its meeting on Nov. 1.
