The mandatory evacuation for residents in a one-mile radius around the Air Liquide Speciality Chemicals plant in Port Allen has been lifted and U.S. 190 has been reopened in both directions, Louisiana State Police spokesman Trooper Stephen Hammons said.
The road reopened and the evacuation was lifted just before 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Although emergency officials are still cleaning up the wreckage left behind from Monday’s chemical plant fire, it’s safe for residents to go back home and for motorists to travel near the site, Hammons said.
As people begin returning to their homes, they are asked to inspect their property for debris from the fire. Anyone who finds debris is asked to leave it alone and call Air Liquide at (800) 292-1155. A crew will be sent to the area to dispose of the debris.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
