Crown Crafts Inc., a Gonzales-based baby products seller, reported earnings of $530,000, or 5 cents per share, for the three months ended July 3, the first quarter of the company’s 2012 fiscal year.

A year earlier, Crown reported earnings of $726,000, or 8 cents per share. Crown’s results were affected by higher-than expected costs for raw materials, labor, transportation and currency associated with the Chinese factories that make Crown’s goods, E. Randall Chestnut, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.

Those costs were partially offset by reduced marketing and administrative expenses.

However, Crown reported its first quarter sales increased to $17.5 million, compared to $17.2 million a year earlier.

Sales of bedding, blankets and accessories increased 3.3 percent to $13 million, while sales of bibs, bath and disposable products decreased 1.8 percent to $4.5 million.
