BEIJING -China’s newly opened Jiaozhou Bay bridge goes the extra mile — or more like 2 1/2-miles — to overtake the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana as the world’s longest bridge over water, according to Guinness World Records.

The 26-mile-long span links China’s eastern port city of Qingdao to the island of Huangdao.

State-run CCTV said the bridge, supported by more than 5,000 pillars, cost more than $1.5 billion and took four years to build.

CCTV said the bridge passed construction appraisals on Monday and the bridge and an undersea tunnel opened to traffic Thursday.
