Des Moines, IA — Willson Contreras scattered four hits, drove home four runs to lead the Iowa Cubs to a 9-1 win over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday night. The win snaps a four-game skid for the Cubs (1-4) and drops the Zephyrs to 2-3.
The Cubs scored a run in the first inning after John Andreoli led the game off with a walk and scored on a Dan Vogelbach RBI single. Cubs added a run in the third inning and Javy Baez hammered a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Felix Pena earned the win in relief and Ivan Pineyro took the loss for the Zephyrs.
Iowa took advantage of six walks issued by the Zephyr pitchers, including four walks to lead off an inning. All four scored.
Destin Hood added two hits for the Zephyrs. New Orleans trailed 9-0 after eight innings, but got a pair of ninth inning hits to push across a lone run.
The Zephyrs have allowed a run in the first inning in all five games this season.
