ALEXANDRIA — Hundreds of soldiers from the Patriot Brigade based at Fort Polk are returning to Louisiana after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan, The Associated Press reported Monday.

Fort Polk spokeswoman Kim Reischling says it’s among the last big groups from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division to return.

The soldiers are expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon at Alexandria International Airport.

Among those meeting them will be 93-year-old Sara Simmonds and her Apple Pie Brigade.

Over the years, Simmons’ group has given soldiers returning to Fort Polk more than 93,000 apple pies, plus lots of hugs and thanks.
