Louisiana’s sugarcane industry set a new record for raw sugar production with the 2012 crop, according to the American Sugar Cane League.

Louisiana’s 489 farmers and 11 sugar mills produced 1.71 million tons of raw sugar, beating the 1999 record of 1.67 million tons, according to a news release. Louisiana’s sugarcane harvest from the 22-parish sugar belt began in August and wrapped up on Jan. 15.

The American Sugar Cane League of the U.S.A., Inc. is a nonprofit organization of Louisiana sugarcane growers and processors.
