One person was killed after an 18-wheeler crashed at the foot of the Atchafalya Basin Bridge at Henderson late Thursday, prompting the closure of Interstate 10 westbound, State Police said.

State Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons said an 18-wheeler traveling east crossed the median and struck another 18-wheeler traveling west.

Hammons said one of the 18-wheelers was carrying drilling mud that caught fire as a result of the crash. The victim’s identity was not available late Thursday or early Friday.

According to DOTD’s Twitter pages, the agency is urging motorists who are traveling to Lafayette to use I-110 North in Baton Rouge to get to U.S. 190 West as an alternate. I-10 East is open. I-10 West was still closed as of 10 a.m.
