A 20-year-old Geismar woman was killed Thursday morning when she was ejected from her vehicle on Interstate 10 after striking the bridge of drainage canal, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

The crash occurred on I-10 near the Bluff Road overpass in Ascension Parish shortly after 3 a.m.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Amanda Walton was driving a 2004 GMC Denali east on I-10 when she began traveling toward the median. Walton overcorrected, crossed back over both eastbound lanes, and struck the bridge, according to the release.

The vehicle then began to roll and Walton was ejected. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walton’s passenger, Dwyne Guitreau, 25 of Greenwell Springs, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, according to the release.

Troopers suspect alcohol may have been a factor in this crash and have submitted a sample of Walton’s blood to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
