Alcorn State has Southern's number this season - two as in the number of times the Braves have defeated the Jaguars this season

Alcorn State defeated Southern 38-24 to win the SWAC championship game at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The victory was Alcorn State's first SWAC championship since 1994. The Braves defeated Southern 56-16 on Sept. 27.

Alcorn State snapped a seven-game winning streak by Southern (9-4, 8-2) and denied the Jaguars a chance to win the black college national title.

Alcorn State (10-3, 8-2) did it by surviving a Southern rally and coming up with a surge of its own to take control of the game.

Trailing 24-10, Southern came back to tie the score.

The Jaguars drove 85 yards for touchdown on the opening possession of the third quarter, finishing on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Malcolm Crockett, to cut Alcorn State's lead to 24-17.

Southern tied the score at 24 when Dennis Craig recovered a blocked punt by teammate Mason Ceasar and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown.

But Alcorn State came back to take a 31-24 lead when running back Anthony Williams III scooted his way up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Braves quarterback John Gibbs Jr. threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon Vessell, who caught the ball in the flat, avoided a tackle and raced down the sidelines untouched to the end zone. The play made the score 38-24 with 14:12 left in the game, and Southern never recovered.

The Jaguars Had two good chances to score, but failed. On one possession they were stopped on four downs at the Alcorn State 15. Alcorn State also recovered a fumble by Southern runnign back Lenard Tillery in its own end zone.

Meanwhile, Alcorn State dominated the first half. The Braves took the opening drive and went 71 yards on seven plays for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Gibbs Jr. threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Payne and had a 50-yard run on the possession.

The Braves increased their lead to 10-0 when Haiden McCraney hit a 27-yard field goal on their third possession to make the score 10-0 in the third quarter.

Williams had a 12-yard touchdown run to make the score 17-3 with 8:20 left in the first half.

Southern cut the elead to 17-10 when Willie Quinn exploded up the middle for a 86-yard punt return for a touchdown with 2:59 remaining.

But Gibbs threw a touchdown pass with eight seconds left in the half to make the score 24-10.
