The LSU Honors College will welcome author Bruce Watson to address Honors College students and the LSU community at the Honors College Convocation Wednesday, according to an LSU news release.

The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the LSU Union Ballroom.

Honors College Convocation annually kicks off the academic year, and Watson was invited to speak after his book, “Freedom Summer: The Savage Season That Made Mississippi Burn and Made America a Democracy,” was chosen for the Honors College 2011 Summer Shared Reading Program.

The intent of the Honors Shared Reading Program is to give new honors students a common experience and to introduce them to the culture of the Honors College, which emphasizes LSU’s Commitment to Community.

Before arriving on campus in August, all incoming honors students were required to read “Freedom Summer.” At convocation, they get to hear directly from the author and will have the opportunity to meet faculty members and interact with other freshmen.

“Freedom Summer” revisits the pivotal civil rights struggle that occurred during 1964, when volunteers fighting for equality were harassed and persecuted by forces both public and private.
