There’s very little that is commonplace in exclusive St. Andrews, a gated community tucked away at the back of Greeenbriar Estates in Prairieville. The home at 37111 St. Andrews Fairway is an elegant French style offering with a taste of New Orleans mixed in. With lots of old brick and cypress —and a fabulous pool courtyard — the property just has a timeless look in upscale St. Andrews.
Driving into the community, you know it’s a special place. One of the finest new mansions in the area greets guests who pass through the gates. Take a left here and you’ll go around to St. Andrews Fairway. The home has a brick-aproned driveway leading around back to the rear-loading 3-car garage. A New Orleans style courtyard has nice statuary, and a brick sidewalk meanders around a sugar kettle fountain in front of the home. Slate ridge caps, copper lanterns, and a copper gutter and drainage system are added upscale features.
But things get really interesting in back, where a fabulous brick courtyard and gunite pool with a hot tub present a relaxing and serene picture. Three antique cypress Acadian-style playhouses with tin roofs are tucked away in a corner of the shady back yard.
Inside, antique heart pine and Old St. Louis bricks are the order of the day. There are natural and painted brick accent walls, plenty of exposed cypress beams and solid 8-foot interior doors. The front entrance is impressive, with double doors topped by a sunset transom. A small foyer leads to the living room, where a faux stone fireplace by Jon McArthur is on one wall. Ahead, directly in your line of sight, is a wall of windows to the aggregate back porch and backyard paradise. That’s the thing about this home; it takes full advantage of its location on an unlevel lot. Windows across the back of the home all have views of the pool and courtyard below.
Interior ceilings are tall at 12 feet, and even higher in some rooms like the master bath. The master suite is opulent, with the back side of the living room’s faux stone fireplace keeping cold winter nights cozy. But the unique master bath is a must-see, with an old brick accent wall vaulting to 18-plus feet. A half-round brick fountain and a lion’s head mantle are included on the accent wall. Cypress plank doors with automatic light switches lead to closets on either side of the brick wall. There’s also a black Jacuzzi tub and an oversized tile shower with dual water sources. In another surprise, the floors and counters on the double vanities are stained concrete.
The kitchen, meanwhile, features a center island and counter tops of heavy Mexican tile. The ceiling is coffered by heavy cypress beams, and a pot-filler extends from the hand-painted tiles that back the 4- burner Jenn-Air gas cook top and griddle. A big GE Monogram sideby- side refrigerator is on one wall, and a triple stainless sink separates the kitchen’s two dishwashers. An icemaker is useful for entertaining, at which this home would excel. Pocket doors lead to a keeping/ multi-purpose room, and there’s a half-bath and large crafts room near the laundry room.
Upstairs, two bedrooms share a Hollywood bath, and a third bedroom has its own full bath. The long upstairs has a sitting room with a workspace that’s made for homework. Also up here is a set of French doors to a balcony that overlooks the pool courtyard below, and something my kids loved — a laundry chute.
Finally, the 1,900-square-foot guest house shown on the front page is not included in the home’s 4,294 square feet of living area. The guest house has 9- and 10-foot ceilings, two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a garage and a crafts room. But the highlight on the second floor is the game room, spacious and perfect for teen parties.
