The ZooLights walking tour begins its second holiday season, and it appears this event is getting big in popularity from patrons, and in the number of animal figurines making seasonal appearances to show off its holiday radiance.

Approximately 9,000 passed through the zoo turnstiles to take in ZooLights last year. That number is expected to double this year, Mary Woods said. Woods serves as the Baton Rouge Zoo’s marketing and development director.

Lighting paths for patrons along the way are illuminated figurines, including lions, dinosaurs, penguins, birds, elephants, monkeys, peacocks, even meerkats, along with Santa Claus and his team.

Additionally, ZooLights features games and arts and crafts for children.

The event is now open 5-8 p.m., Thursdays-Sundays through Dec. 18. ZooLights lights up nightly Dec. 19-30, however, the event is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Dec. 24-25.

Admission is $5 for adults/teens, $4 seniors, $3 ages 2-12. The zoo grounds close at 9 p.m. For $2, gazers may begin their tour with “holiday specs,” each pair refracting points of light into Christmas figurines — reindeers, snowflakes, snowmen and Santa Claus.

ZooLights, however, represents only one of many area Christmas seasonal spectacles involving lights, food, music, celebration and fellowship. Here is a list of many others celebrating the Christmas holiday season:
