U.S. District Judge Ralph Tyson of the Middle District of Louisiana has died, federal Clerk of Court Nick Lorio said Monday morning.

He was 63.

Tyson, who was born in Baton Rouge, was nominated to the court in 1998 by then President Bill Clinton.

Tyson has served as the middle district’s chief judge since 2005, according to the Federal Judicial Center’s biography on Tyson.

Tyson is a 1973 graduate of the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Tyson was named the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for the LSU law school.
